Sea Breeze-2017 planning concludes in Odesa

The press centre of the Naval Forces of Ukraine has reported that this year’s exercise will have a different headquarters structure that will include an exercise control headquarters and a separate naval command headquarters developed using NATO standards. The method used to conduct the exercise will also be different – the international maneuverers will be held in “free play” mode.

During Sea Breeze-2017, the multinational naval command headquarters will exercise planning and control of forces, decision-making, and management of ship tactical groups plus coastal and air components. This will test the capability of the advanced naval command headquarters to manage forces and operations in accordance with NATO standards.

Ukrainian and American seamen will be joined by colleagues from Britain, Belgium, Bulgaria, Greece, Georgia, Italy, Canada, Lithuania, Moldova, Germany, Norway, Poland, Romania, Turkey, France and Sweden. The theme of Sea Breeze-2017 is a multinational maritime security operation in a crisis region.

The exercise, scheduled for July 2017, will be preceded by training courses for Ukrainian sailors led by foreign experts. There will also be phases of operational planning without the engagement of forces, which will allow the naval command headquarters to enhance its readiness to conduct the active phase of the international manoeuvres.

Sea Breeze exercises have been held annually since 1997. The drills will be conducted in the Odesa and Mykolayiv oblasts, and in the northwestern part of the Black Sea.
